Update:
Originally when we did the homework, Carly had the answer as 7. But the homework came home "corrected" with the answer marked as 15? I sent a note back to the school yesterday asking was that right? Because if it was, I needed a math lesson.
The teacher sent word back that the answer was 7, oops!

The homework paper came home tonight with this problem corrected. I can't decide if it was "mis-corrected" or if I am making this harder than it is? I am the first to admit that my math skills are severely lacking. They are only slightly better than my spelling which is horrific.

My guess is seven, too, but I never was good at story problems and this problem has a story, so don't trust me.

I also guess 7, but I have a feeling that's not the 'right' answer. Last year when my son was in 1st grade his math homework frustrated me sometimes too- the terms they used were so obscure and I felt bad for him, he had no idea. Where do they get this stuff? What happened to 11-4 = ? Why do they have to phrase it in such a way that the kids end up confused instead of learning something?! I am dying to know what the real answer is now!

Yes, it's 7. My kids get dumb questions like that one too.
Why can't they just put
4+?=11. They just don't do math like they used to. Like it's not confusing enough as it it.

I would think it would be 7, though trying to help Whitney on her 2nd grade homework this week proved a mess too because I didn't understand the instructions apparently.
I would have to say Go ask your Dad! Heavens to Betsy what's school coming to when you can't just get away with 2+2=4 & See Jane Run..
That's what I DO say...'Go ask your dad'! Math just doesn't seem to be taught very simply these days, does it?! My 2 older kids (a senior & a sophomore) do fairly well with math but my 7th grader struggles a bit :)
I overthink these things too much! The wording of the question is what makes it tricky!

Phew! I thought I was even more mathematically challenged than I previously thought.
Thanks for letting us know.. you know I have been on the edge of my seat waiting to hear. Glad that the teacher was wrong and not the rest of us!
The sad part here with me is that often, I have to go and summon Elijah's older sister to "read" the "new" math and how it is solved.
I used to pride myself as being fairly savy in math...now I am not so sure.
