DC: day one

{we became real pros at riding the metro -
although I would avoid 8:00 & 5:00 if possible!
I think I could get use to having a subway.}
{U.S. Capitol Building - magnificent building including at night.
Didn't realize that Capitol Hill was truly a hill.
Love the way it stands out across the city}

{Supreme Court Building -didn't go inside but the outside is impressive}

{Library of Congress- 140 million articles are stored somewhere? I didn't see them but the building is beautiful inside and out. I did learn that the library was started with Thomas Jefferson's book collection some 6 thousand items.} {National Postal Museum - Carly made and mailed her Dad a postcard from one of the exhibits. It is now 7 days later and it hasn't made it here yet. Obviously not the speediest mail drop in the country.
There was a statue of Benjamin Franklin in the museum - curious to me until I read that he was the first Postmaster General. I didn't know that.}

{Union Station - we found ourselves here several times. The building was wonderful and it was filled full of whatever you might possibly need. The Amtrak stops there and we saw advertisements that you could ride to New York for $20. Now that seems like bargain!}

Tired after the airplane ride and an afternoon of sight-seeing, we headed back to our hotel (on the metro no less). Thank goodness for thick hotel drapes to convince Carly that it was bed time even though it is still daylight outside (at home it is dark at 8:30, not in DC).

Love your DC pictures and "tour." The LAST time I went with an 8th grade class from school we went in the Library of Congress and I was KNOCKED over by the beauty of it. Don't know why I waited soooooo long to see it.

About the 8:30 and all's still light deal - - - welcome to ONE of the reasons I HATE DST. HATE. We didn't USED to do it in IN and it STILL stayed light until 9ish - - - now it never stinkin' GETS dark. Hehehehehehehehe

You certainly had a busy first day. I love DC and always say that if I was young and single, that's where I'd live! Amazing, amazing city! Can't wait to hear about the rest of the trip.

BTW, I love Union Station! Could you believe their food court!

The Hubs took me to DC a few years ago. I had never been if you can believe it. I loved every minute we were there, even when it was snowing and we were freezing! I've never walked so much in my life -- seriously thought my legs were going to fall right off. I agree with you about the metro. Wonderful! I was also surprised at how nice people were. I really expected to encounter some rude folks (what with it being the "Big City" and all), but everyone we talked to was absolutely delightful.

I'm so glad y'all had a good time! Can't wait to hear and see more!

when i was in high school (just outside of D.C.) the metro was fairly new. we used to ride in and spend hours upon hours meeting up with friends and romping around the Smithsonians. many lunches were grabbed at the food court in Union Station.

i am so thankful for spending some wonderful years with D.C. as my backyard. i wish i was closer now...

My first experience with a Metro was 2 years ago in Paris, and it totally made a convert out of me. It's just too cool to be able to get all over town so easily without a car.

I'm wondering if the postcard has arrived yet?

Love the Metro in DC too. You can go anywhere! Makes me want to live in a city.
